Grandparents belong in the photo too

📷 Photography Tip — Grandparents belong in the photo too

Some of the most meaningful photos I’ve ever taken weren’t of kids — they were of kids with their grandparents.

We tend to book family sessions around the immediate family: parents and kids. But if grandma and grandpa are nearby (or visiting!), bringing them in is almost never something families regret — and skipping it sometimes is.

Three-generation photos become heirlooms. Grandma’s hands holding a grandbaby’s. Grandpa telling a joke only the kids find funny. Those images grow more valuable every single year.

It doesn’t complicate the session as much as you’d think. We do the big group first while everyone’s fresh, then grandparents can relax while I work with the kids.

And a tip: don’t over-pose the grandparents. Some of the best frames are them simply watching the grandkids play. That look on their face can’t be staged.

Holidays and family reunions are perfect excuses — if everyone’s already in town, that’s your window.

When was the last photo of your kids with their grandparents? If you have to think hard about it, it might be time.
