Don’t let the weather win

πŸ“· Photography Tip — Don’t let the weather win

Living in the Midwest means one thing is guaranteed: the weather will have opinions about your photo session.

Here’s how I think about it:

Light rain or overcast? We shoot. Overcast skies are actually beautiful for portraits — soft, even light with no harsh shadows. A little drizzle adds mood. Some of my favorite shots have come from “bad weather” days.

Heavy rain, storms, or extreme heat? We reschedule. No great photo is worth anyone being miserable or unsafe.

Wind? Usually manageable — and honestly, a little movement in hair and clothing often looks better than perfectly still.

The key is flexibility and communication. I always keep an eye on the forecast leading up to a session and I’ll reach out early if we need to adjust. No last-minute scrambles.

I also keep a short list of covered or sheltered locations for days when the sky just won’t cooperate.

What’s your backup plan when outdoor plans get rained out? I’d love to hear!
